Board fence options
A wooden wicker fence made of boards by manufacturing technology differs little from the construction of familiar wooden fences. The pillars also serve as the base, but filling the spans with enclosing elements is performed in a special way: long and thin boards are braided between the pillars and additional posts.
This method of erecting fences is suitable for outdoor fences that protect the site from the road, and for the construction of small front gardens on the inside. There are two options for installing planks in a wicker fence:
- horizontal arrangement;
- vertical layout.
Vertical
To twist the fence boards vertically, it is necessary to install three horizontal guides between the supports. Boards are woven vertically with fastening on each rail.
The fence, assembled using vertical technology, allows air to flow through, reducing the overall windage of the structure. It reliably protects the site from the penetration of passers-by and animals, while it looks beautiful and original.
Horizontal
To assemble a horizontal wicker fence from a board, it will be necessary to equip the support posts with lower stops that allow the first row of boards to be held at the required height from the ground.
Weaving subsequent boards is performed so that the upper bar overlaps the open support of the lower bar from above. It turns out the figure: the open section of the support, above the closed section of the support, then again open and so on to the very top of the fence. The final board is nailed directly, closing the supports from the outside.
The fixing of the strips is carried out with nails or self-tapping screws to the supporting boards and intermediate bars. The edges of the boards wind up behind the pillar and cut, achieving a vertical line. Fences with horizontal planks resemble traditional village fences, but look solid and unusual.
Necessary materials and tools
Before you make a fence braid from the boards, you will need to find the right material and stock up with tools to do the work.
As a material for the fence use:
- Edged boards. For fencing, an inch board is suitable. Lumber with a greater thickness will resist when trying to bend them when weaving. The length depends on the pitch of the posts, but not less than 3000 mm for horizontal fences. For the vertical version, lumber is cut to a given size. Before installing the board, it is recommended to trim on all sides.
- Pillars The choice of material for the pillars depends on the capabilities of the customer. Most often, metal pipes are taken as the basis, but they also use concrete, wooden and brick poles.
- Additional supports and guides. For the vertical type of fencing, wooden guides will be required - not edged boards with a section of 30-40 mm. For horizontal fences, additional bars are selected, which are installed between the supports in such a way that the planks can be braided. The cross section of the bars is 50 * 50 mm or 40 * 40 mm.
- Tools for processing wooden parts. To ensure a long service life of the fence, all wooden surfaces are treated with antiseptics, the next step is the application of paint. If wooden poles are used, in addition to antiseptic treatment, it is recommended to isolate with the roofing material the lower part of the column located in the ground.
- Bulk materials. These include: sand, cement, gravel. Used for the preparation of cement-sand mortar when installing supports in pits.
- Fasteners. Nails, screws. For outdoor work, galvanized fasteners are purchased.
To assemble the fence wicker from the board with your own hands, you will need tools:
- Shovel, earth drill.
- Tank for mixing cement-sand mortar.
- Level, vertical plummet.
- Screwdriver.
- A hammer.
- Long twine.
- Brush or spray for paint composition.
Marking and earthworks
The construction of a wicker fence from the boards with your own hands begins with determining the installation location of the pillars. Before doing the markup, specify the boundaries of the site and find the corner reference points. To get a clear line of the future fence, a cord is pulled between the corners.
To determine the points of the arrangement of the pillars, the measurements are transferred to paper. In the drawing, the distance between the columns is calculated taking into account the length of the boards and guides. When working with measurements, it is recommended to make a photo or video fixation of the area, so that when drawing parts on paper to represent the overall picture.
When calculating the distance between the columns, the following factors are taken into account:
- The distance between the metal supports is usually 3000 mm. If the supports are made of wood, the distance is reduced to 2000-2500 mm;
- When planning the distance between the supports, you need to take into account that the edges of the horizontal bars should partially overlap the support;
- In damp places, it is advisable to carry out land reclamation work on drainage water.
Pole Mounting
Having marked the installation points of the poles on the fence line, they proceed to the installation of the frame. As the material for the supports, metal pipes of round and square sections, wooden poles, bricks and concrete pipes are used. Depending on the selected material and the total weight of the structure, they are determined with the need to organize the foundation.
Instructions for installing supports on marked points:
- With the help of a shovel or auger, pits are prepared. To avoid the influence of seasonal temperature fluctuations, the immersion depth of the column for massive fences is made lower than the freezing depth of the soil in the region. The diameter of the pit depends on the thickness of the column and the planned volume of pouring cement-sand mortar for concreting;
- Crushed stone, sand and tamped at the bottom of the pit;
- Part of the support, which will be in the ground, is treated with an antiseptic and coated with bitumen mastic;
- Vertically mounted posts are poured with cement-sand mortar. Further work is carried out after 7 days, the final period of concrete strength gain is 28 days. To ensure a strict vertical use a plumb line and level;
- The posts are painted, and a plug is fixed on the top to prevent precipitation from entering the pipe. At wooden supports, the upper part is cut off at an angle of 30-45 degrees. For brick pillars, a nozzle is made of galvanized iron sheet;
- In the preparation of supports for mounting a horizontal type of fence, limiters are installed in the form of pieces of a bar or a metal profile.
Limiter Mount
Limiters are required to counter the sliding of the slats mounted horizontally.
For metal poles, limiters are made of a metal corner and profile. The length of the limiter is calculated so that the ends of the board fit freely on them. Metal stops are welded.
For wooden posts, bar stops with a cross section of 30 * 30 mm are used. They are nailed or screwed on with self-tapping screws.
Installation of fence boards
The method of mounting the planks depends on the type of fence.
Mounting strips on a horizontal fence start from the bottom board installed on the stops. Next, the upper bar is installed. Between the upper and lower planks, an intermediate support is fixed at an equal distance from the posts.
Each subsequent board is laid between the supports, changing the position of the end relative to the bottom board. In places of contact with the support, the bar is fixed with screws or nails. In accordance with the specified algorithm, step-by-step lay all the trims. The upper board is mounted from the outside directly without institution through an intermediate support.
Mounting strips on a vertical fence start with the installation of three transverse rails. They are placed at an equal distance from each other. Planks are cut to the desired size and begin installation from the outermost pillar. When laying the straps are attached to the guide screws.
Finish finish
Finishing includes surface treatment of fencing with protective equipment and paints and varnishes. It is recommended to impregnate wooden elements with an antiseptic prior to installation, and painting is carried out after the installation of the fence.
Paint is applied using a brush or a special spray. To ensure a long service life of the structure, application is required no less than two layers. When choosing a material, it is necessary to select colorful compositions intended for outdoor use.
